How do the holidays impact mental health?
3 in 5 Americans struggle with mental health over the holidays. Despite the cheery festivities, many find the holiday season stressful, anxious, and even overwhelming to the point of mental crisis.
Just a few causes of holiday mental health struggles include:
● Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
● Not being around family or not having family
● Financial stress about gift-giving and hosting
● Strained family relationships
● Failure to meet societal expectations of magical events
All of these stressors can create mental health issues or make existing mental health issues worse.
How do I care for my mental health over the holidays?
If you or a loved one are struggling with holiday mental health issues, you’re not alone. Here are a few tips for safely getting through this difficult time:
Avoid social media: you don’t need to meet other people’s holiday expectations.
Make a cooldown plan: have someone or somewhere you can go to when things get really bad.
Set budgets and boundaries: know exactly how much you’re able/willing to spend and who you are willing to talk to.
Keep up healthy habits: don’t let holiday food and scheduling keep you from your normal routine. Additionally, try to stay away from alcohol and drugs.
Know your triggers: make sure you know what upsets you so you can work to step away from triggering situations.
Let yourself feel: don’t punish yourself for feeling sad during the holidays.
Who can help me with my mental health over the holidays?
Sometimes, tips aren’t enough. If you’re in a mental health emergency, call 911 or contact the Suicide and Crisis Hotline.
If you’re searching for non-emergency holiday support, it might be time to contact a mental health professional.
